Family Puppy Plus

dorriefudgieExperts agree that the first 5 months of your puppy’s life are the most important. Events that your puppy experiences during this time (both good and bad) have a lasting effect. Impromptu playgroups or dog parks can be unhealthy and scary to puppies. That is why we recommend starting training with time to socialize your puppy in a clean, safe environment.

Family Puppy Plus is an individualized class where teams transition to more advanced training over the course of the twelve weeks. Teams begin at the 6 PM hour for four weeks and then graduate on to the Family Puppy Classes at 7 and 8 PM to learn new skills.

6:00 Family Puppy Plus – Among the topics covered are: house training, puppy biting, puppy safety, puppies and children. And we make sure to include plenty of time for you to ask any questions that you have.

We give you the tools to successfully integrate your puppy into the family. In addition to the techniques you learn in class, you take home informative, family-friendly handouts.

Pre-requisites: Puppies attend Family Puppy Plus when they are between 8 and 20 weeks of age.

They must be actively involved in a vaccination protocol, with negative fecal. Concerned? Check out the following information from the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior : Puppy Socialization

When they are ready, teams are advanced to training for the remainder of the session time.

7:00 & 8:00 PM Family Puppy Plus – At your pace training based on the Family Puppy curriculum. Please see description for details.

Length: 12 weeks
Cost: $260

Puppy Next Step

Class meets for 6 weeks.  Each lesson 1 hour.

Tuition- $180*

Congratulations!  You have completed your puppy’s first class but they are still very young. And as you may have noticed a bit more active than they were when they were 8 to 16 weeks old.

This is where Family Dog Training’s Puppy Next Step class comes in.  It’s our 6 week follow-on class to Puppy Beginner to help you through your pup’s adolescent stage.

We work on getting better on-leash behavior, better walking, better stays and better coming when called.  We will also work on those used-to-be-cute-but-now-not-so-cute behaviors like jumping up, counter surfing and just getting into everything!  We will train a trick or two just for fun and will have lots of time to work on what YOU want your teenage pup to learn.
Fall is a great time of year to train and have some fun at our new location.  Come, Stay, Play!

Experts agree that the training you do in your dog’s first year is the most important work you will ever do with your puppy.

Pre-requisites:  Your puppy has completed a puppy beginner class. Your puppy is under 14 months of age.

Length: 6 weeks

Reliable Recall

For many dogs and their owners there is no behavior more important than a reliable recall. Having your dog comes when it’s called can be a matter of you having a dog or not having a dog.

A reliable recall allows your dog to have a more enriched social life and get more exercise.

This is a 6-week class that teaches a whistle recall skill. It results in having a dog come quickly and reliably from a greater distance, and works equally well for families with multiple dogs. It’s all positive training and we will work both inside and out-of-doors. Whistles will be provided and homework sheets included for each week of skills.

You will need a leash 15-20 feet long and any kind of body harness for the dog. We will have both for purchase if you don’t already have these items.

Because of the nature of this group class we require that your dog be both dog and people friendly. Private Reliable Recall sessions are available for dogs that do not meet this requirement.

Length: 6 weeks
Cost: $180

Classes are taught by Paul Emerson.

Beyond the Leash – Creating a Focused and Confident Dog

This class is based on Leslie McDevitt’s bestselling book Control Unleashed.

The Beyond the Leash format is based on exercises and training games that help your dog to relax, focus and work off-leash in a variety of situations. These games increase your dog’s attention and reduce the stress and distractions often associated with being in unique spaces. The exercises and games are fun for both you and your dog, and are done in a safe and supportive environment.

Dogs need to sniff. Dogs need to greet other dogs. Dogs need to look at things. Dogs need to be normal. The class offers a structure in which the dogs can be dogs and still learn to be focused, working partners with their handlers. You do not have to sacrifice your dog’s “dogness” to create a great performance partner.

This is a great class for those considering any dog sport such as obedience, rally-O or agility, or even those already doing agility who would like better focus and a calmer dog. It’s also a fun class for those who just want to have a more focused dog in any social situation. Prerequisite: Good Dog 101 or equivalent.

Length: 6 weeks
Cost: $180

Introduction to Canine Drive Ball (Treibball)

Intermediate Canine Drive Ball (Treibball)

Advanced Canine Drive Ball (Treibball)

Canine Driveball or Treibball (pronounced try-ball) is a dog sport that originated in Germany. You can think of it as a kind of doggy soccer! Your dog will learn to play by pushing large balls across an indoor or outdoor field into a goal. You will learn how to send your dog out around the “flock” of up to 8 balls and drive one ball at a time into the goal. Driveball is for all types of dogs and it’s just the thing for that dog who needs a job and who is always up and ready to play. At the Introductory or Novice level, dogs work without balls at first and then work with one ball. Then at Intermediate up to 3 balls and finally in Advanced up to eight balls. While competitions are starting to be formed it’s a relatively new sport in this country and lots of fun.

Dogs can be as young as 8 months, assuming they are reliable around other dogs, as dogs may work off leash together in class.

Dogs should have good foundation skills of sit, down, come, stay, attention, targeting and some fetch skill is desirable. In addition the dog should have basic heeling skills. Call 508-243-3922 for a free evaluation for your dog

There is lots of video on You Tube under Treibball and The Canine Driveball Yahoo Groups under Canine Driveball and Treibball. There is also some video on the Family Dog Training Facebook page.

The Introduction class is 8 weeks in length, and the Intermediate and Advanced classes are 6 weeks. The Introduction class is $180 and the Intermediate and Advanced classes are $150.

Come on in and have a ball!
